Do you know what is really in your water?

For too many Americans, turning on the faucet means pouring a cocktail of chemicals. Arsenic, lead, forever chemicals, and hundreds of other substances are found in drinking water at levels that exceed health guidelines. In Florida alone, 7.5 million residents are exposed to unsafe drinking water. The state ranks second worst in the nation. Only 28% of American homes have any filtration at all.

411water is the independent, fact-based consumer guide to water treatment. We do not sell you a system. We show you the facts and match you to the right solution for your home. Not ours.

We show you. You decide.

411water connects you with a water treatment specialist who comes to your home, tests your water on the spot, and walks you through the results. No pressure. No same-day close. A quote that is good for an entire year.

Check your water quality in Florida

Start with what type of water you have. City water and well water face very different problems in Florida. Whether you are in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, or anywhere in the state, your tap water carries contaminants specific to your area. Choose yours below.

Not sure? Most homes in a neighborhood or subdivision are on city water. If you have a well pump on your property, you are on well water.

Free water quality lookup by zip code

Enter your zip code to see which utility serves your area, what contaminants have been detected in your drinking water, and how your tap water compares to health guidelines.

How does this work?

The ugly truth about your drinking water

Only 28% of American homes have any type of water filtration system. Most of those are generic systems not built for their local water. Here is what you are living with if you have not addressed yours. Whether you are on city water in Fort Myers or well water in Lehigh Acres, your tap water carries contaminants that exceed health guidelines.

How your city "cleans" your water

Your city pulls water from the aquifer, packed with 91 contaminants. They remove what they can. Then they add chlorine to kill bacteria. Then chromium to keep the chlorine attached to the microbes. Then ammonia so it does not smell like a swimming pool.

But remember: what are we never supposed to mix when we clean? Bleach and ammonia. That is exactly what is in your water right now.

Florida has 5 to 10 times more chlorine in its water than any other state in the country. The city uses 90% of the water for municipal purposes. Only 1% is for drinking. 9% is for everything else your home needs. They clean it to their standards, not yours.

What it does to your body

Chlorine is essentially bleach. Your skin absorbs it every time you shower. A 15-minute shower is the equivalent of drinking 6 to 8 glasses of that water. Medical studies have linked chlorinated water to bladder, rectal, and breast cancer as early as the 1990s.

Limestone and calcium are inorganic to our bodies. They have been linked to skin problems, kidney stones, gout, and digestive issues. PFAS (forever chemicals) accumulate in your body over time. Bottled water was supposed to be the answer, but now we know the plastic dissolves into the water too.

Florida's water contains contaminants that very few systems are even rated to remove: arsenic, hexavalent chromium, haloacetic acids, radium, total trihalomethanes, and PFAS.

What it does to your home

Hard water voids the warranties on your appliances. Your washing machine, dishwasher, water fixtures, and hot water heater are all at risk. The manufacturers will not cover damage caused by hard water. It is only a matter of time.

Florida is the number one state in the country for repiping, one of the most expensive repairs you can face as a homeowner. Hard water builds up inside your pipes every single day.

Heating hard water costs significantly more on your electric bill. Your hot water heater is the second most expensive system in your house after your HVAC. Hard water makes it work harder every day.

You use significantly more soap, detergent, and cleaning products with hard water because the soap attaches to the minerals instead of cleaning. Products like fabric softeners and hair conditioners were designed specifically to fight hard water. Remove the hard water and you remove the need for those products.

What it does to your pets

Your pets drink the same water you do. Clean, treated water gives them softer fur, healthier skin, and reduces bathing frequency. If you would not drink it, they should not either.

What it does to your plants

Your garden, lawn, and houseplants absorb everything in your water. Chlorine kills beneficial soil bacteria that plants depend on. Heavy metals accumulate in root vegetables and leafy greens. Hard water leaves mineral deposits that block nutrient absorption. If you grow anything you eat, your water quality is in your food.

The real question

If it costs you the same amount to have clean water as it does to live with what you are given, which way makes more sense?

If a fish cannot live in it, why are we?

Go deeper

What is really in Florida's tap water

Florida's aquifer sits in a bed of calcium and limestone. As our state grew, we drained swamps and cut down trees that were part of our natural filtration. A single tree can filter up to 11,000 gallons of water per year. Without that natural process, rainwater carries 91 contaminants including pharmaceuticals, forever chemicals, fecal matter, pesticides, and insecticides straight into the aquifer.

Your city pulls from that aquifer, removes what it can, then adds chlorine to kill bacteria. Then chromium to keep the chlorine attached. Then ammonia so it does not smell like a swimming pool. The water passes federal standards. But legal does not mean safe.

Chlorine is essentially bleach. Then they add ammonia to it. Your skin absorbs it every time you shower. A 15-minute shower is the equivalent of drinking 6 to 8 glasses of that water. Medical studies have linked chlorinated water to bladder, rectal, and breast cancer.

If a fish cannot live in this water, why are we?

Florida well water: what your well is really pulling up

Florida well water contains sulfur, tannins, three types of iron, manganese, and hardness from limestone and calcium. Your water changes with the seasons, just like the earth. A system that works in January may not work in July.

A basic iron filter handles the color and the smell. The water looks cleaner. But the bacteria, algae, and microbes are still living and growing on the filter media itself. Every day your filter is running, it is also growing the very things you are trying to remove.

Many territories with wells today may be on city water in the near future. If you are investing in a system, make sure it can transfer to city water. Otherwise you are paying twice.

A whole home reverse osmosis system requires your well to have over 500 TDS and wastes 2 to 5 gallons for every 1 clean gallon produced. That puts serious strain on your well.

Water filtration systems built for Florida

Florida's water chemistry is unique. A system built for the general US market may not address what is happening specifically in your well or city supply. Here are the main categories of whole home treatment and how they perform in Florida.

Saltless water treatment

Florida and saltless systems do not match. The rock, limestone, and calcium in our water clogs these systems. They mask the problem instead of removing it. Not worth the risk or the money for Florida water.

Whole home reverse osmosis

Produces hospital-grade drinking water from every faucet. But city water does not qualify. Well water needs 500+ TDS. Wastes 2 to 5 gallons per clean gallon. High maintenance cost. Estimated 10-year cost: $20,000 to $37,000.

Ion exchange with UV protection

Good water quality but high annual maintenance ($300 to $700 per year for UV alone). You never know when the UV light fails. Microbes still grow on the filter media, shortening the system's life. UV replacement over 10 years adds $4,000 to $5,000.

Ion exchange protection systems

Prevents microbial growth on the media. Longer service intervals based on actual water usage. All water is hospital-grade coming into your home and drinkable. One of the most effective ways to treat water in Florida at this time.

A specialist is available to walk you through how each system reacts to your specific water and what the real cost of ownership looks like over 10 years.

How to make the right decision

Before you buy any water treatment system, evaluate it on these criteria. If the company cannot clearly answer every one of these, it is probably not the right system for your home.

+Cost of ownership over a 10-year period
+Cost of initial purchase
+Estimated cost of service over 10 years
+Life expectancy of the system
+Warranty type, duration, and what voids it
+What the system treats your water for
+How it treats the water (the actual method)
+Cost of any pretreatment required
+Antimicrobial protection (does it prevent growth on the media?)

Watch out for

Builder-grade systems

Never let the builder choose. These systems typically fail within weeks. Rarely last 5 years. Builders choose the cheapest route, not the best for your water.

Big box store systems

Built for the whole US, not for Florida's specific problems. Using today's water parameters does not account for seasonal changes. You will replace these multiple times in 10 years and spend the same amount or more.

Middle market dealers

Do your research. Background checks matter. There are documented cases of dealers selling used units at new prices, changing business names, and refusing to honor warranties.

Right of Rescission: If you have made a purchase within the last 72 hours and it has not been installed, do not allow installation. Once installed, the 72-hour cancellation right no longer applies. Call us if you need guidance.

Arsenic, PFAS, and what your water is doing to you

Florida's water contains contaminants that very few systems are even rated to remove. These include arsenic, chlorate, hexavalent chromium, haloacetic acids, radium, total trihalomethanes, pesticides, insecticides, and PFAS (forever chemicals).

Limestone and calcium in our water are linked to skin problems, kidney stones, gout, and damage throughout your home. Inorganic minerals that our bodies were never meant to process.

Studies have linked chemically treated water to cancer as early as the 1990s. Bottled water was supposed to be the answer, but research now shows we are ingesting plastic that is also inorganic to the human body.

Clean water provides better skin, hair, digestion, energy, longer lasting appliances, pipes, and life. Statistics have proven it. The question is: how much longer will you wait?

Florida's independent water treatment specialist

411water was founded by William Jenkins, a veteran water treatment professional based in Fort Myers, Florida. After years in the industry, William saw the same pattern over and over: high-pressure sales tactics, overpriced systems that did not fit the customer's water, and a complete lack of transparency about what systems actually do and what they cost.

He chose to be different. 411water is a fact-based consumer platform with dealer direct, market-competitive pricing. Not a dealer showroom. We test your water, show you the data, and match you to the right system based on your water chemistry, not our commission. If a competitor's product fits better, we will tell you. We would rather earn your trust than make a sale.

This is a family business. It is personal. William's understanding and experience in water treatment technology is what drives every recommendation. He stays on top of the latest science and still delivers the most competitive pricing in the market.

Understanding your water

Is my water the same as when I grew up?>
No. Chemical treatment of water has increased significantly. Microbes have become stronger and more resilient, requiring more chemicals to treat. PFAS (forever chemicals) are a relatively new contaminant that did not exist in our water supply decades ago. The water you grew up drinking out of the hose is not the same water coming from your tap today.
Why filtration over bottled water?>
Bottled water was supposed to be the solution to chemically treated tap water. But research has shown that plastic from the bottles dissolves into the water. We are ingesting microplastics that are inorganic to the human body. A whole home filtration system gives you clean water from every faucet without the plastic, the cost, or the environmental impact.
How much does untreated water really cost?>
Most homeowners do not realize what untreated water costs them. Between bottled water, wasted energy heating hard water, extra soap and cleaning products, shortened appliance life, and the risk of repiping your home (Florida is the number one state for repiping, one of the most expensive repairs you can face), the hidden costs add up fast. We can show you the real picture during your in-home analysis.
What certifications should I look for?>
Look for NSF/ANSI certifications (44, 42, 58, 372), WQA certification, EPA registration, and IAPMO certification. Very few residential systems carry all of these. The more certifications a system has, the more independently verified its claims are. Ask the dealer exactly which certifications their specific system holds, not just their brand.
Why does Florida have such bad water?>
Florida drained its swamps and cut down trees to build homes, destroying the natural filtration process. A single tree can filter up to 11,000 gallons of water per year. Without that filtration, contaminants from agriculture, development, and the limestone aquifer go straight into our water supply. The state now ranks second worst in the nation for water quality.
What is the Right of Rescission?>
Florida law provides a 72-hour cancellation period for purchases made in your home. If you have signed a contract and the system has NOT been installed, you have the right to cancel within 72 hours. Important: do not allow installation if you are unsure, because once the system is installed, the 72-hour rule no longer applies. Call us if you need help navigating this.
Does hard water really void my appliance warranties?>
Yes. Hard water leaves mineral buildup inside your appliances. Manufacturers consider this damage from operating conditions, not a product defect. Your washing machine, dishwasher, water heater, and fixtures are all at risk. The appliance company will not cover it. Insurance typically will not either.
Is clean water better for my pets?>
Absolutely. Your pets drink the same water you do. Treated water gives them softer fur, healthier skin, and can reduce how often they need bathing. If the water is not safe enough for a fish to live in, it is worth considering what it is doing to your dog or cat over years of daily consumption.

Questions about us

Who should I do business with?>
Look for a company that can clearly explain their service intervals, warranty terms, cost of ownership over 10 years, and exactly how their system treats your water. If they struggle with any of these, keep looking. Ask for the warranty in writing before you purchase. If they will not provide it, be very careful doing business with them.
Why am I getting door-knocked for water treatment?>
Door-to-door water treatment sales are common in Florida. Many of these companies use high-pressure tactics and same-day close strategies. Remember: you are not obligated to make a decision on the spot. Get the information, do your own research, and compare. If they will not give you time, that tells you something about their business.
Does 411water ship nationally?>
Yes. We provide full-service installation throughout Florida. For the rest of the country, we ship RO systems, solo filters, and components with detailed installation instructions. We can also coordinate with local plumbers in your area for professional installation.
How is 411water different from other water companies?>
We are a fact-based consumer platform with dealer direct pricing, not a pressure-sales operation. We test your water and match you to the right system based on your water chemistry, not our commission. If a competitor's system fits your water better, we will tell you. Our quote is good for a full year. No rush. No games.
What happens during the in-home visit?>
A water treatment specialist tests your water on-site for chlorine, hardness, contaminants, and water chemistry specific to your area. You get results in minutes. We walk you through what each result means, show you which systems fit your water, and give you a full cost-of-ownership picture over 10 years. No charge. No obligation.
Do you offer financing?>
Yes. Soft credit pull only, zero effect on your score. 0% financing available for qualified buyers. The pre-qualification takes under 2 minutes. Monthly options start as low as $29. Call for current details and promotions.
